Our vision is for a revitalized historic district that retains its human heritage as well as its architectural heritage. We believe that a fully gentrified Casco would be a social and cultural disaster in the short-term, and an economic disaster in the long run. Because of the number of abandoned buildings and empty lots in the historic district and its surrounds, there is more than enough room for all existing residents and quite a few new ones. To make this vision come true, both the public and private sectors need to take building affordable housing seriously.

Our commitment is to complete one affordable housing unit for every high-end unit we build. Our primary focus is affordable condominiums that permit existing residents to purchase their own homes, but we have also done light restorations to historic buildings to make suitable residences for local artists who cannot qualify for traditional mortgages. We currently have a reserve of empty lots in the historic district sufficient to build over 100 units of affordable housing.
